Good news for Sri Lanka cricket fans, the 2nd edition of Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL), is going to take place from 10th August to 7th September, 2013. SLPL is a franchise based Twenty20 cricket competition of Sri Lanka. The news of SLPL 2013 happening has been recently confirmed by Sri Lanka's Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
The sports minister (Mahindananda Aluthgamage) told in the local Sunday press that the franchises were pulling out. They have requested to extend their lease period from 7 years to 15 years as 7 years are not enough to recover their costs on the Franchise. But according to Sri Lanka's sports ministry, the franchise owners have not affirmed their incapability to participate in the SLPL 2013. In fact, their request was an opinion for the Attorney-General's Department based on the current contracts.
SLPL 2012 contained seven province-based teams but in SLPL 2013 there will be nine provincial teams. So, there will be at least 39 matches in the tournament instead of 24. These matches will be played at three stadiums: Galle International Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and R Premadasa Stadium.
All the teams will play in the group stage and then in the knockout stage. The top four teams will progress to the semi-finals. No third place play off this year. The schedule for SLPL 2013 has been not announced till now.
